Also known as artificial silk, or art silk for short, the first example of rayon was invented in 1855 by Swiss engineer, Georges Audemars. Commercial production, however, didn’t begin until 1891.
As the term artificial silk implies, rayon fibers closely resemble those of naturally occurring silk, only they are tougher, more durable, and much easier to produce.
Common uses include:
- Protective clothing and equipment
- Construction materials
- Automotive parts
