Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has made significant investments in the development of its capabilities in seals and molded components for healthcare and medical applications. One of those was the acquisition of Specialty Silicone Fabricators in 2016. Drew Rogers is now part of the Trelleborg family, and gives his thoughts on the demanding Healthcare & Medical market and how Trelleborg Sealing Solutions is developing its offering to serve it’s customers.

“Our ability to then develop manufacturing processes for the silicone components for these devices can reduce time to market and help navigate the regulatory requirements, which are often weighty.”
DREW ROGERS, Global Director Healthcare & Medical at Trelleborg Sealing Solutions
WHAT ARE DRUG-ELUTING DEVICES?
Silicones have several unique characteristics that make them attractive for drug-eluting or delivery combination products. These have led to the development of silicone drug devices for use in various medical specialties including cardiology, ophthalmology and women’s health.
Silicone drug devices are either produced by adding drug powders to silicone raw materials or through a soaking process that facilitates the impregnation of drugs from solution into silicone rubber. Once implanted or in contact with the body, they transfer a drug to the patient consistently, protecting from infection or providing regular treatment.
The advantages of drug-eluting devices are:
Reduced side effects compared to systemic dosage
Consistent elution rates compared to bolice dosage
Compliance with dosage intervals
